Simple Minds formed in the late 70's in Glasgow in Scotland. To my mind they made their best music from their first album "Life In A Day" through to their album "Sparkle In The Rain" from 1984.
After this time they seemed to loose their way and they also got too commercial and they became a "stadium rock band". The music after this mid eighties period became mainstream and their popularity went down with the record buying public.
They are back again now and touring with a new album which is not a bad collection of songs and have had great reviews from the critics.
But to really know what Simple Minds was all about you really should listen to the early stuff.

Check out this video for the song The American form the 1981 album Sister Feelings Call. This is one of my favourite Simple Minds Tracks.

Here is another classic track from Sister Feelings Call called Theme For Great Cities. It is an instrumental but just listen to the track. Its hard to believe its nearly 30 years old!

Simple Minds Music

The best early band line up was as follows...

Jim Kerr - Lead vocals
Charlie Burchill - Guitar, keyboards
Mel Gaynor - Drums, percussion
Derek Forbes - Bass guitar
Mick MacNeil - Keyboards

The early tracks were very bass driven with lots of jangly guitar from Charlie Birchall and a great heavy drum backing the tracks up....

Check out Love Song from the 1981 album Sons And Fascination. A fantastic track which stands up today as a great song.
